What will happen if you cut sugar out of your diet for thirty days? Let’s talk about it.

Metabolic flexibility is a term used to describe how smoothly and efficiently your cells can adapt to utilize and burn fuel like fat, ketones, or glucose.

When you’re metabolically inflexible, this transition is very dysfunctional. Your ability to burn fat in a fasting state will be very difficult. If you can’t lose weight when fasting or exercising, this could be why.

Metabolic inflexibility can lead to diabetes, obesity, loss of muscle protein, and chronic illnesses. It can also cause irritability, fatigue, anxiety, and hunger. When you try to fast, you won’t feel very good, and you’ll miss out on certain benefits if you’re not metabolically flexible.

Insulin resistance is at the heart of this problem. Insulin controls whether you burn fat or not. If someone is metabolically inflexible, they have insulin resistance. Insulin tells the body not to burn fat and to store fat instead.

On the flip side, metabolic flexibility is really insulin sensitivity, and there are ways to make the body more metabolically flexible or insulin sensitive.

When you become more metabolically flexible, you’ll be able to fast for longer without hunger or cravings, burn fat, and burn sugar more efficiently.

How to transition your body into a state of metabolic flexibility and insulin sensitivity:
1. Eat less frequently
2. Eat fewer carbohydrates
3. Eat sufficient amounts of fat, but not excessive amounts of fat
4. Try exercise snacking (do short bouts of exercise throughout the day)

If you do these things for thirty days, it could have a significant positive impact on improving your metabolic flexibility and your overall health.

  1. Can you do a video about cane sugar? Is it any bad like normal sugar?

Organic foods have cane sugar in their ingredients. I always wonder how bad cane sugar is. Is it bad or not bad? I’d like to hear about that.

  2. I stop eating sugar for one day and my blood sugar dropped very low. I didn’t even take my diabetes medication. If I did I probably be dead.

  3. The conditions to fullfil before cutting off sugar are hard to meet, eat your sugar in moderation and at intervals not snacking,, your body truely needs sugar , if you cant maintain enough supply of protein and fats dont try to cut off sugar otherwise you will not want the repercussions

  4. Day 12 doing clean keto and Intermittent Fasting. Today I went to a wedding, took a bite of a strawberry, and it tasted too sweet. They had beautiful cake for everyone, and I was not tempted at all. It was a strange & amazing feeling! Thank you, Dr Berg

  5. When you say you posted a link in description it description I never
find it! Where is your personal web?

  6. How many grams of fat is sufficient if I’m doing 2 meals a day and 17-18 hr fast? I usually have an avocado a day that I split between my 2 meals. I no longer add dairy fat bc i felt bloated and I was getting acne. I rely on meat fat and oils but with avocado also so is this too much fat?

  8. Hi Dr. Berg, I was told by a physio that IF isnt good for peri menopausal women. Even Dr Stacy Sims says the same. what is your opinion?

  9. this is the first time I’ve heard that exercising a few minutes at a time throughout the day is beneficial. that actually makes me *want* to incorporate exercise into my day and attempt to make lifestyle changes.

  10. *if you’re ready to break free from the shackles of diabetes, diabetes freedom is the solution you’ve been searching for. It’s time to take charge of your health and live your best life.*

  11. I’m a 68 year old retired woman. I live in NZ and I’m a chronic sugar addict. I’ve dieted all my life with success at times. I exercise daily with my dog. I’m going to make a concerted effort to go sugar free ( added sugar and processed food free) on January first. After reading many podcasts I’m dreading the withdrawals but I need to do it for my health particularly my weight ( I need to lose 35lb and feel better). Any tips would be grateful particularly re the withdrawals.

  12. In 2023 I did no carbs and sugar for 2 weeks. I ate only keto foods and did intermittent fasting (20 hours and OMAD). I walked everyday.I did 5km and 10km walks. I lost 8.2kg in 14 days. I weighed 95kg when I started doing this. I felt so great mentally and physically. I did however have the keto flu for 2 days but once it was over I felt so good. Just a pity I fell off the wagon. I am doing all this again. I’m on day 3 now and I am down with the keto flu/ sugar withdrawal 😢.Will stick it out. I am determined to beat the sugar demon.

  13. I had to cut out sugar to deal with Candida overgrowth in the gut, but I’m already on the slim side of what is healthy for my height. How do I make sure I don’t lose more weight while off sugar for a few months? I’m 2 weeks in and have already lost at least 5lb.

  14. Dr. Berg, can you give examples of #3? Exactly, what would these lower fat meals look like, specifically. Thank you for your videos, you have helped me immeasurably.

  15. This video came literally while I’m in the middle of a 30 day no sugar detox.. Talk about perfect timing. I started on the 1st because it’s a new year and I’m doing 30 days because my birthday is on January 31st, so it works out perfectly; No sugar from the start of the new year until the day before my birthday. Then on my birthday I can enjoy some cake.

  16. Starting this detox today. I quit alcohol on July 28th, and naturally, my sugar craving increased. This month, I am going to remain sober and add no sugar. I’m motivated and excited but realize it will be challenging.

  17. Sugar withdrawal is brutally challenging. I’m on day 9 of strict carnivore and experienced intense withdrawal symptoms on days 4,6,8,9 (mostly late at night). On day 8 i broke and had 2 spoonfuls of honey (34g) in my coffee. It made day 9 harder to be honest. I noticed that the bad withdrawal moments last about an hour each, but they’re surprisingly aggressive. Very irritable with extreme cravings. I’m hoping to last until day 14 or day whatever it takes in order to beat the withdrawals, but that process is extremely hard. It’s worse than pain pills because it feels like i have to do it on will power alone.

  18. You ALONE gave me victory over my physical health 🥹 I found you during Covid and started doing intermittent fasting. I’ve lost 45 pounds gradually and kept it off. Started at 16:8 now doing 20:4 as a life style. Never looking back.

  19. Dr Berg can you do a video explaining how to flush sugar out of the body quickly the best way? I mean specifically after splurging on a sugary dessert that we all do once in a while. Would be nice to know the best way to do that like overnight if possible. I don’t like the idea of excess sugar lingering in my body for too long. All I can find online is: drink lots of water, long walks, lots of sleep? Does vitamin D, B vitamins, Potassium, Magnesium help flush sugar? 🤔 Eat a bowl of greens? What’s the quickest way..

  20. the one really bad sugar holding me back was chocolate, i was very much addicted to it, now ive slowly come off it, to the point where i will only treat myself to it every two weeks, if i get a really bad sugar craving, i will have a zero sugar energy drink but other then that ill eat 1-2 meals a day and thats it, im noticing my body feels different, but i have body dymorphia and its hard to see a difference from a mirror.

  21. Dr Berg, you are inspirational. I have reduced my weight from 105kg to 85kg and counting. Yes i’m in the gym too but your videos have inspire me immensely and now my wife is on a similar journey. Secretly I think she was just bored of me shouting about my new body. Cheers buddy!

  22. For what it`s worth: I use to be a sugar addict. A homeopath suggested chromium supplement. I am sugar free since then( about 4 years now)……when I feel for sugar, I pop a chromium tablet……now I am in the habit of popping a chromium once/twice a week.

  23. Im struggling with this. Sugar is so addictive for me😢 since I stop eating sugar i feel super tired and sleepy 😴 im sure is becase my body os detoxing but im miserable 😢
